Banco Sabadell Foundation Marine Sustainability Award

This award aims to promote the work of Spanish scientists in the fields of marine sustainability, sustainable use of marine resources and regeneration of natural capital.

The Jury recognised the work of Dr Oihane C. Basurko, who is a graduate in Environmental Sciences from the University of Girona and holder of a PhD in maritime sustainability from the Newcastle University (United Kingdom, 2010). Since 2010, she has been part of the team at AZTI where her work has focused on the development of solutions for the fisheries, aquaculture and shipping sectors, and for the regional, national and European authorities. Through her research, she seeks to help others to adopt new patterns of behaviour, aimed at fostering sustainability and the circular economy, in relation to both marine litter pollution and decarbonisation.
