“Caring for Smiles, Changing Lives” is a social project developed by the Faculty of Dentistry at the Universitat Internacional de Catalunya (UIC) university that targets those at risk of social exclusion and who cannot afford dental work. The project also aims to bring about a transformational change among dentistry students at UIC Barcelona. Overseen by university professors, the students conduct dental procedures and impart training sessions and/or training cycles aimed at these vulnerable groups. The project not only benefits the patients who receive treatment, but it also helps to teach UIC students about generosity and the need to help those most in need, whilst at the same time helping them to learn about the more complex cases that require all of their
knowledge, as well as their personal and professional experience, in order to help the patient.

“These social initiatives not only help us to improve the health of those who need it the most, but they also help us to train our students to become people who are fully committed to their environment and to the patients”.
Dr Lluis Giner-Tarrida, Dean at the UIC Faculty of Dentistry
