Jan Stuhler, Professor of Economics at the Universidad Carlos III university in Madrid, has been recognised with the 24th Banco Sabadell Foundation Award for Economic Research, for his empirical research into the fields of labour economics and public economics, with a particular focus on intergenerational mobility.

The panel of judges for this edition, presided over by Teresa Garcia-Milà, Director of the Barcelona School of Economics and President of the Cercle d’Economia, praised Stuhler’s paper, which “offers a detailed analysis of the mechanisms through which inequality is transmitted over several generations, emphasising the fundamental role of education, the family environment, and the structure of the labour market”. They also highlighted his in-depth research into “the integration of migrants in the labour market and the economic implications of demographic changes”.

Stuhler combines rigorous econometric tools with a “critical and contextualised” view, significantly enriching the academic debate about social mobility and equality. His contributions, recognised internationally, are a key reference to understand the processes through which inequality is reproduced and to steer the design of public policies in order to promote more equal opportunities.

In addition to the development of innovative empirical methods, Stuhler also analyses the effect of immigration on labour markets: “Although immigration continues to be a central topic for public policy, its implications for the labour market are still not fully understood. These effects are related to broader issues connected to how the job market works and how it responds to economic shocks. Our research helps to strengthen the validity of causal estimates of the impact of immigration and offers a more complete understanding of how labour markets adapt to demographic and institutional changes”, explained the recipient of the award.

Josep Oliu, Chairman of Banco Sabadell and of its Foundation, noted that this award, created in 2001, serves to recognise and drive forward the career path of researchers in the field of economics: “our resolve is to keep on distinguishing the careers of researchers who contribute, through their work, to the analysis and creation of alternatives that promote economic and social welfare”. He further added: “This award, throughout its 24 editions, has helped to consolidate and give visibility to researchers who are shaping current economic thinking”. Oliu will deliver the award on 7 October in Oviedo, during a ceremony that will bring together authorities and prominent economic and business executives.

This award forms part of the commitment undertaken by the Banco Sabadell Foundation to recognise talent among researchers and to showcase how their lines of research can influence progress and people’s wellbeing, along with its other research awards, specifically those for Biomedical Research, Science and Engineering, and Marine Sustainability. The last of these will be presented on 21st October in Alicante.

A trajectory centred on the effects of immigration on the labour market and on the transmission of inequalities

Stuhler studied Economics at the University of Bonn and at University College London, where he obtained his PhD in 2014. He later joined the Universidad Carlos III in Madrid (UC3M), where he was granted tenure in 2017 and was promoted to Professor in 2024. He has also held previous positions, including as Visiting Scholar at Harvard University (2017) and as Visiting Professor and Postgraduate Lecturer at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) during the 2021/22 academic year.

Stuhler’s papers have been published in prominent academic magazines, including the Quarterly Journal of Economics, the Journal of Political Economy and the Review of Economic Studies. He is currently co-editor of Labour Economics, the magazine of the European Association of Labour Economists.
